www.BiodefenseStocks.com, Homeland Security Portal, Update on Biodefense Stocks and Industry: “Stockpile of smallpox vaccine builds in response to fears of a bioterror attack.”
POINT ROBERTS, WA.; January 26,2005 -www.BiodefenseStocks.com, an investor news portal for the Biodefense sector within the HomelandDefenseStocks.com (HDS) content umbrella, reports on the recent news reported by the World Health Organization (WHO) that work has begun on building a 200 million-dose stockpile of smallpox vaccine to prepare for a possible bioterror attack. Smallpox is an acute contagious disease caused by the variola virus and without vaccination we are susceptible to infection, with a thirty percent potential mortality rate. Separate from vaccines, one public company is developing a treatment countermeasure that captures smallpox related viruses and toxins directly from human blood.
Health ministers from the G7 have recently agreed to establish a bioterrorism crisis center to prepare globally against germ warfare attacks, with the WHO taking the lead in building vaccine stockpiles. A recent hypothetical smallpox attack showed the leaders of G7 countries that they are not prepared with enough smallpox vaccine in the eventuality of a biological attack.

Aethlon Medical Smallpox Related Data:
Aethlon Medical, Inc. (OTCBB: AEMD) announced in December that its scientists had completed initial non-clinical human blood studies which indicate that the Hemopurifier(TM) treatment technology is effective in capturing smallpox related viruses from human blood. The studies documented that the Hemopurifier was able to capture 85% of Vaccinia from human blood in one hour and in excess of 95% during an overnight treatment study. Vaccinia is a “pox”-type virus closely related to smallpox. Related studies also indicated that the Hemopurifier was effective in removing other smallpox related viruses, including cowpox and mousepox.
“Taken together, these studies strongly indicate that the Hemopurifier(TM) will be effective in removing circulating smallpox virus from the blood of infected patients, even when the virus has been engineered to be resistant to drugs and vaccines, stated Richard H. Tullis, Ph.D., Aethlons Chief Scientific Officer.
Aethlon”s clinical goal is to develop the Hemopurifier as a countermeasure against smallpox and other viruses and toxins that are referenced in the U.S. government”s stated plan to acquire emergency stockpiles of treatments against candidate biological weapons. Project BioShield, which was signed into law on July 21,2004, authorizes $5.6 billion over 10 years to purchase and deploy new countermeasures against Smallpox, Anthrax, Ebola, Marburg, Plague, and other potential bioterror agents. Under Project BioShield, clinical efficacy for these bioweapons is established in animal models rather than in large-scale human trials. Aethlon believes that the Hemopurifier can serve as the first line of defense in treating drug and vaccine resistant biological weapons.
